CUPPING THERAPY is an ancient practice that spans both East and West. In the East, the Chinese have been practicing the art of cupping for at least three thousand years. The ancient Greeks, Romans, through the Alexandrians and Byzantines, cupping therapy was passed on to the Muslim Arabs and Persians (modern Iran). The Prophet Mohammed even approved and permitted the use of Hijama cupping therapy.
The old Chinese wisdom implies that pain results from the congestion, stagnation, and blockage of Qi, or vital energy, vital fluids, lymph, phlegm, and blood. If pain is the element of disease, then suffering is a result of inconsistent flow our body. Cupping is, therefore, a way of breaking up the blockage to restore the body’s natural flow of energy.
Cupping relieves tired, sore, and overworked muscles, perfect for ridding the body of acute pain. Even better for people who need to add more to their chronic pain management regimen. Immediate stress relief will be experienced.
Is cupping safe?
Cupping is safe when done by a trained professional on people who are generally healthy.
Keep in mind: The Cups may leave big, hickey-like bruises on your skin that can last from a day to a week depending on your circulations—so if that’s not something you’re interested in ask your therapist to do gliding cupping to minimize the redness. The color of the marks will vary with each person it does not imply how well cupping will work for your body.
There is a common misconception that cupping can cause bruising. However, the marks left by cupping are not bruises. Bruising is caused by impact trauma leading to breakage of capillaries and a reactionary rush of fluids to the damaged location from the tissue injury. There is no compression in cup therapy, only negative pressure (suction not compression).
One of the ways I personally describe what cupping feels like is deep tissue the opposite say. If the suction of the cups feels too tight or pinchy the pressure can be adjusted by the therapist. It does not have to hurt at all, you don’t have to be a suck it up for it to work. The results of the work depend on the skills set of the therapist using the tools (Cups).
Even though Cupping Therapy may appear to be painful for some people it is not.
In short: Cupping is not going to do any severe damage or add to your injuries—and hey, it most likely will help that back pain that’s been bothering you for weeks, so give it a try.

When I hear the term treat, I think of it as something that is a reward. When I hear the term splurge, I think of something that was not necessary, it was an impulsive purchase.
Yes, massage can feel like a pampering treat most of the times. However, those moments when you feel like you’re having a treatment fit for a queen or king with warm oils massaged into your skin or heated stones melting your stress away consider that you are hitting the pause button on your stressors. It’s like freezing time and hitting the reset button. Don’t you believe you deserve that?
Yes, you deserve that one hour or ninety minutes to put all your worries on hold until your mind clears and your anxiety with it all dissolves. I’ve had clients who were able to gain some clarity with work or family stressors while getting a massage.

Which Massage Is Best?
There are over twenty different types of massages from which you can choose. However, there are two main branches of massage.
1. Structural massage: this type is meant to address musculoskeletal pain through myofascial, neuromuscular, and various soft-tissue techniques.
2. Relaxation massage (similar to Swedish massage): is intended to assist with relaxation through techniques, such as long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, or vibration.
If you are getting a massage post-surgery or in the recovery of a significant injury, make sure to let the massage therapist know. Choose a more gentle or passive massage on recently strained or injured tissues.
If you still aren’t sure, my best advice is to call the therapist you intend to schedule with, and she/he will be happy to recommend what is best for you. Or refer you to a massage therapist that specializes in the type of massage that is necessary for your body.
My suggestion to ALL of my clients is to schedule well care regimens massages whether it be weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. This will help keep muscles pliable, tension free and will go a long way in helping to prevent postural problems that often result in neck pain, low back pain, headaches and an overall feeling of tightness.
Ok now let’s look at those statements again. If you only get a massage for your birthday then try telling about three people you would like a massage gift certificate. Most likely will get 3 or more massages from your loved ones. If cost is a factor, consider getting a 30 minutes massage. This option cost less and works for people who like to maximize their time daily. Yes, it’s shorter, but it is still very effective and powerful.
Even though massage may seem like a treat for some it is definitely a Complementary and Alternative Medicine TREATment for others.
